Brookfield was first settled in the 1780’s, and at that time the only churches in the area were the Presbyterian meeting houses in Truro and Onslow, and Londonderry township. By 1832 Brookfield had grown enough to separate from the Truro congregation, and plans were immediately begun for a new church. A two-storey building was erected near the centre of the village, and this building lasted for almost forty years before a new church was needed.
When Brookfield separated from the Truro congregation it joined with the Middle Stewiacke congregation, and except for a period between 1889 till 1896, these congregations have continued to constitute the Brookfield Pastoral Charge. The minister lived in the Middle Stewiacke manse until 1920.
In 1870 a new church was built in Brookfield, which has been renovated several times, most recently with the addition of an auditorium, kitchen, office and washrooms in the 1980’s..
In 1925, the Presbyterian congregation voted 83 to 2 in favour of church union, by which the Congregational, Methodist and the majority of Presbyterian church in Canada united to form the United Church of Canada, and Knox Presbyterian Church in Brookfield became Knox United Church
